Flick sees a strong performance in Mainz
Mainz’s Anton Stach is still hoping to take part in the World Cup from November 20th to December 18th in Qatar. “I think I still have a chance,” said the 23-year-old midfielder, who has made two appearances for the national team so far, after the Bundesliga game against 1. FC Köln (5-0) on Friday evening.
He doesn’t know whether he’s on the list of 55 candidates for a World Cup nomination – “but I hope so”. In the thrashing of Mainz 05, he not only showed a strong performance, but also contributed a goal to the great victory in front of national coach Hansi Flick. “Everything has been free again for two, three, four weeks, my head is also free so that I can move normally,” revealed Stach.
After a few injury-related setbacks at the beginning of the season, Stach is in top form. “I’m happy that he’s playing more freely again,” said 05 coach Bo Svensson, while Stach had previously been “inhibited”. “He’s a different player. This is the Anton we know from last season. He has a completely different power, a completely different self-image.” When asked if he would nominate Stach for the World Cup, the Dane replied: “I’m not the national coach.” But Svensson added: “I think Anton is a good player and makes it great. Everything else – Hansi will take care of that.” Stach made his debut under Flick last March in a friendly against Israel (2-0).
