The bog bodies were therefore also given a place in the production. Reason for Van den Brink to shoot on location in Drenthe last year. “Half of the film was shot in the Amsterdam area, the other half in Drenthe. We visited the Oosterbos near Nieuw-Dordrecht, the Bargerveen, the Bongeveen and the heath near Gasteren.”
A necessary step for authenticity, according to the director. “Where else will I find a peat area like in Drenthe?”
It was not easy for the crew. Initially, there was a lot of setback, according to the filmmaker. “On the first day there was quite a storm. While we needed calm, so there went our own created fog.” On the second day in the Oosterbos, production had to relocate. “A Greylag goose was breeding at the site, so we had to move to another location.” Another day later, a herd of Scottish highlanders strolled unsuspectingly onto the set. “And of course they didn’t want to leave,” laughs Van den Brink.
Despite all the hurdles, the end result is there, says Van den Brink. The last word is, of course, up to the public. Drenthe horror fans can judge for themselves today and next week in De Nieuwe Kolk in Assen and Kinepolis in Emmen.
