Maikkar’s former news anchor has lived in a van for three years

Aino Huilaja admits that she is excited and even afraid of the new Vanlife trip.

Maikkar’s journalist who is also remembered as a news anchor The only Huilaja and his spouse who enjoys being behind the camera Jerry Ylkänen jumped off the squirrel bike three years ago. Since then, they have lived a nomadic life around southern Europe with their dog Arska.

Now the trio is facing a completely new one, when the nose of the van that serves as a home is turned in the new one Vanlife – Arctic roadtrip – series towards the north. The program involves wintering in the middle of wind and frost. At the same time, Aino returns to her roots and visits, among other things, the hermitage built by her father in the middle of the forests of Lapland.

– For more than three years, we haven’t had a real home of our own in Finland, where we could always return to, says Aino in the opening sequence.

The upcoming trip makes me nervous.

– I have never been so excited before. It’s even scary, because the conditions are much more demanding than in the south. Here, the challenge factor increases manifold.

The first problems hit the spot already when filming has barely started. The camera seems to freeze almost all the time because of the cold.

Aino and his spouse’s van is not designed for winter living. The insulation could be improved, as well as the heating device. Over

Everyday life is also complicated by the fact that you have to give up the chemical toilet.

– You cannot use a chemical toilet when there is a lot of frost, because the liquids would freeze.

The emptied toilet is still packed for the trip, because Aino hopes that it can be dug out in the spring.

Investments have been made in sleeping bags. They should keep warm even when the meter shows 30 degrees below zero. Over
