Maikel Kieftenbeld chooses a contract with FC Emmen after seven years in England: ‘Hope to be able to be important here with my experience’

Maikel Kieftenbeld returns to the Netherlands. The 31-year-old midfielder has signed a contract with FC Emmen, the Drenthe club that has been promoted to the Eredivisie as champion from the Kitchen Champion Division.

Kieftenbeld is the first reinforcement of FC Emmen this summer. ,,We have already made an attempt to contract Maikel in the winter of 2020-2021”, says chairman Ronald Lubbers. ,,Unfortunately for us, ‘Kieft’ eventually made a nice transfer from Birmingham City to Millwall. Since then we have always kept in touch and are therefore happy that it has now worked out.”

Kieftenbeld previously played for Go Ahead Eagles and FC Groningen and has already played 235 official matches in Dutch professional football. In 2015 he moved to England and played football there for Birmingham City and Milwall. ,,After seven great years in England, the time has come for me to return to the Netherlands. FC Emmen is a great club with ambition and I hope to be able to be important to the team with my experience here.”
