Mahsun Kırmızıgül’s touching memory of Yıldız Kenter and the ‘White Angel’

This week’s guest of “Songs We Tell Us”, which aired on Kanal D on Saturday evenings, was Mahsun Kırmızıgül, who returned to the music world with his new album “Hoş Geldin” after 16 years. Successfully sang different music genres such as arabesque, folk music and folk songs besides her own songs, Kırmızıgül presented a musical feast with the presenters of the program Hakan Altun, Sibel Can and Hüsnü Şenlenen. Talking about his career journey between songs, the artist made remarkable statements when the subject was opened from the cinema.

“THIS MAY BE OUR LAST FILM”

Kırmızıgül, who stepped into the cinema with ‘White Angel’ in 2007; With ‘I Saw the Sun’ (2009), ‘Five Minarets in New York’ (2010), Miracle (2015), ‘Queen Finger’ (2017) and ‘Miracle 2: Love’ (2019), he has another passion in his life with music. He continued his journey in the cinema. The famous name, who was in the director’s chair, wrote the script and played the role of “White Angel”, made everyone sad with his words about the production, which includes star names in the cast. The speech of Yıldız Kenter, who gave life to the character of ‘Angel’, on the first day of the shooting caused emotional moments to be experienced.

Stating that the master artist wanted to talk to the other actors minutes before the set started, Kırmızıgül used the following statements:

“I will say something very important about this movie. This is my first movie, the firsts are unforgettable. I will never forget the times when we were on the set of this movie. I will talk about the prejudices in Turkey. In the world of cinema, they used to say, ‘Mahsun has taken the old people out of battery, he is shooting a movie’ , ‘Will this Mahsun sing again in his films?’ Such strange and strange conversations. I will never forget the first day of the set. Yıldız Kenter asked, ‘Can we talk something before Canikom starts the set?’ He went in front of the camera, I gathered the whole crew. “Guys, this may be our last film. We read a story and this scenario unites us here. We believe and trust our director very much. He is our Mahsun teacher on the set from now on. Please take care of yourself seriously.” Do your best. Because I will do my best,” he said. After all, the teacher calling me ‘Mahsun teacher’, can you imagine?”

SEVEN LEGENDS LOST

The successive deaths of many legends, as well as Yıldız Kenter, who said “Maybe this is our last film” and died at the age of 91 on November 17, 2019, shocked the art world. Sad news came from the veteran names of Turkish cinema Gazanfer Özcan (2009), Erol Günaydın (2012), Nejat Uygur (2013), Tomris Oguzalp (2013), Toron Karacaoğlu (2018) and Erol Demiröz (2021).

‘WHITE ANGEL’ LAW

“White Angel prepared the ground for the enactment of a law covering the issue of ‘health and on-site care for the elderly and people in need of care’. It was aimed to prevent the elderly from having to live in nursing homes separately from their families. In ‘Songs Tell Us’, the social aspect of the unforgettable film was also emphasized.”

GREETING TO THE MASTERS

“While parents were able to fit dozens of grandchildren in their tiny houses and little hearts, the children could not fit their elderly parents in their big apartments, in a corner of their villa…” The line was brought to the screen once again in the program and the master artists who passed away were once again remembered with longing.

“THATCHES HAVE CHANGED THE MOUTH IN A MOMENT”

Mahsun Kırmızıgül also talked about the negative comments made about him in his first cinema experience and how the evaluations in this direction have evolved in the opposite direction after the great success of the film. The famous actor and director described his experiences of those days as follows:

“After the shooting of the movie is over, our distributor calls the theaters one by one, we wait to see how many copies will go. We were told ’21 copies’. A normal movie in Turkey is released with 50 copies. Cinemas in remote corners asked us. After sending the trailer, it increased to 161 copies. It was the most watched movie at the time it was released. They changed their words to the actors they called ‘Old Man’ and despised, and said, ‘If I play such a masterful actor, my film will work too.’ It really is like that.”

TWO MILLION TICKETS!

White Angel, which was screened for 52 weeks across Turkey, attracted a total of 2 million 32 thousand 885 people to movie theaters and earned 14 million 657 thousand 214 TL. Receiving acclaim for his first cinema experience, Kırmızıgül outdid the “Kabadayı” (1 million 487 thousand 991 people) starring Şener Şen and Kenan İmirzalıoğlu in the same year, with more than 200 thousand spectators.
