Adam Maher continues his career in Saudi Arabia. The midfielder is leaving FC Utrecht for Damac FC, the Eredivisionist reported on Monday website†
Maher was under contract for another year with FC Utrecht, which receives a transfer fee for the five-time Orange international. The club will not disclose the amount.
The 28-year-old Maher played three seasons for FC Utrecht and previously played for AZ, PSV and FC Twente. The Dutch talent of the year 2012 was ready for a new step in his career, having previously played abroad for the Turkish Osmanlispor.
Maher signs a lucrative three-year contract with Damac FC, which plays at the highest level in Saudi Arabia.
‘We wanted to keep him in our selection’
FC Utrecht did not want to lose Maher, says technical director Jordy Zuidam. “We informed Adam that we wanted to keep him in our squad because of his footballing qualities.”
“But we also indicated that we were willing to cooperate with a departure in case a suitable offer was made for him. The latter happened, and Adam personally reached an agreement with Damac FC.”
Maher is already the third midfielder to leave FC Utrecht this summer. Joris van Overeem signed with Maccabi Tel Aviv and the transfer-free Simon Gustafson has not yet found a new club.
The club from the Domstad also announced the arrival of Modibo Sagnan on Monday. The 23-year-old left-footed central defender comes on a rental basis from Real Sociedad, but an option to buy has also been included. “He has power, duel power and can be ruthless in personal duels,” said Zuidam about the new acquisition, who was active with France under 23 at the Olympic Games last summer.
