Ten Hag’s idea, also considering the injuries that affected Varane’s first season, is to have four power plants more or less on the same level in order to choose the center pair that best suits his needs. The Red Devils will go on the market in search of a central defender who offers more guarantees than who is in the squad if he can get rid of three gaps: Tuanzebe, Bailly and Phil Jones. This means that at the status quo Maguire is far from sure of his position as a holder. Also because the arrival of a level defender risks relegating him, almost certainly, to a more secondary role. It seems incredible for a player who just three summers ago arrived at Old Trafford with the label of doomed. In this sense, the investment is also at risk: arrived for 87 million euros from Leicester City, an astronomical transfer collapsed both from a performance and economic point of view.
