England international Harry Maguire is no longer captain at Manchester United.
The 30-year-old himself said on Twitter that coach Erik ten Hag had told him in a conversation that there would be a new team captain at the traditional Premier League club.
“He explained his reasons to me and while I’m personally extremely disappointed, I will continue to do my best every time I wear the shirt,” Maguire wrote. “Since the day I took the role three and a half years ago , it was a great privilege.”
Little operating time, no bandage
There had already been media reports earlier this month that ten Hag was planning to depose Maguire. The reason for this is said to have been the few appearances by the defender last season. Maguire had started just eight Premier League games. That’s why there was already speculation about the sporting future of the defender, who is associated with West Ham United.
Maguire has now described being captain of the Manchester club as “one of the greatest honors in club football”. “I did everything I could to help United succeed – on and off the field,” Maguire wrote.
Bruno Fernandes had worn the captain’s armband in Maguire’s absence from the starting lineup. It is speculated that the Portugal international will now take on the role permanently.
