The current champion since 2013 has decided not to play the world championship in 2023

The next champion will emerge from the matchup between Nepomniatchi and Ding Liren

Magnus Carlsen has announced through a podcast that he will not compete in the world championship and therefore will not defend his crown in 2023. For the first time in a decade, the Norwegian will not defend his title.

On the Unibet podcast, Carlsen has answered the question that the entire chess world was asking, was Carlsen going to defend his crown? for he has replied that he will NOT. In this same talk, Carlsen has explained the reasons why he will not defend his crown. Among other things, he has admitted that in the famous talk between him and the FIDE president he only told him that he would not participate. He has also stated that FIDE tried to convince him with some changes in the format but that this has not been enough to convince the five-time world champion. And it is that Magnus Carlsen has only said that today he does not want to play a world championship and that is the only reason why the Norwegian will not participate.
