In 2015 and 2018, Van Gerwen already showed himself to be the strongest at the tournament in Germany. Then the Dutchman defeated Gary Anderson and James Wilson respectively in the final. Five years ago, Van Gerwen lost the final to Peter Wright.

Wright drops out

On Sunday, Van Gerwen first won in the eighth finals against Martin Lukeman (6-4), and then started preparing for a clash with Wright. However, the world champion from Scotland withdrew, giving the Dutchman a free pass to the semi-final.

In that phase of the tournament, things did not go smoothly against Dimitri Van den Bergh. A 5-3 lead for Van Gerwen turned into a 6-5 deficit. De Brabander then got away well – his opponent missed several competition arrows – took the victory out of the fire.
