Magdeburg (dpa) – SC Magdeburg is still on course for the title in the Handball Bundesliga even after the EM break.
The European League winner came in the first league game after the European Championship to an unchallenged 28:19 (13:8) victory against bottom GWD Minden and extended the table lead with 34:2 points for the time being. The chasing trio THW Kiel (28:8), SG Flensburg-Handewitt (27:7) and Füchse Berlin (25:9) will only get back into action on Thursday.
Three days after the 34:26 win in the cup quarterfinals against Minden, Magdeburg again had no problems with the East Westphalians in front of 2661 spectators. Iceland’s Omar Ingi Magnusson was the top scorer with eight goals. For Minden (7:31 points), the situation in the table basement remains critical.
However, the table penultimate HBW Balingen-Weilstetten (9:29) could not score in the relegation battle. The Swabians lost at home to SC DHfK Leipzig 25:29 (12:16). On the other hand, thanks to a 33:27 (17:9) win against Frisch Auf Göppingen, Bergische HC moved away from the relegation zone by 15:23 points. The game HC Erlangen against MT Melsungen had to be postponed due to several corona cases in the Hessian team.
