In the end, two time penalties cost Sporting the game
From the start, Magdeburg and the Portuguese league leaders exchanged blows openly. Violent shots from the second row, spins, feints and Kempa tricks: both teams dug deep into their bags of tricks and threw the balls at the unfortunate goalkeepers. It was already 21:20 at the break.
In particular, Magdeburg was hardly able to capitalize on outnumbered situations. In the end Sporting had ten to two two-minute penalties and had to cope with three red cards. For a long time, however, that didn’t change the fact that Magdeburg was just behind. Only when top scorer Kiko Costa and his coach and father Ricardo Costa complained too vehemently after a goal was disallowed two minutes before the end, did it become too much.
Now it’s against Nantes
Lukas Mertens only scored the winning goal 15 seconds before the end. However, the outstanding player was Omar Ingi Magnusson with ten goals. Opponents in the quarter-finals (April 26/May 3) are top French club HBC Nantes, who eliminated last year’s finalists Berlin.
