Former Bundesliga coach Felix Magath believes that Union Berlin is capable of a really big hit.
“If a club is at the top after 26 games, then it’s right at the top. Then it’s no longer a coincidence. That’s why the Unioners can of course create a sensation and become German champions,” said Magath in an interview with “Sport Bild”.
The third-placed Berliners are currently four points behind leaders Bayern Munich (55). “It would be a pleasure for the whole of football Germany – maybe with the exception of Bayern – if something surprising happened again,” said Magath, who sees the Union “on the right track”.
Magath praises Union defender and former protégé Knoche
The 69-year-old led VfL Wolfsburg to the championship in 2009 and promoted current Union central defender Robin Knoche to the professional squad.
“He sometimes plays outstandingly. He’s reliable, down-to-earth. He’s a top team player,” said Magath, who saved Union’s city rivals Hertha BSC from relegation last year: “I would especially treat him if he won the bowl at the end of the season holds up.”
