Madness in the semifinals – ex-world champion Wright wins with a record

Even before the semi-finals of the Darts World Cup, it was clear that an Englishman would meet a Scot in the final. The English duel had already been decided by the time the Scots made history.

“Snakebite” or the “Flying Scotsman” – that was the question before the second semi-final of the Darts World Cup? The answer was “Snakebite”. Peter Wright won a 6-4 win over compatriot Gary Anderson and met Michael Smith in the final.

Wright’s scoring was particularly impressive. He hit the 180 24 times, setting a World Cup record that was previously 22.

Set 10 – And there is the 24. It really is amazing. And then Anderson does another one too. We’re at 39,180s in this game. Unbelievable. And Peter Wright manages a finish over 116. That’s there final ticket! 3: 2

Set 10 – This is Peter Wright’s 23rd 180. I repeat: this is Peter Wright’s 23rd 180. That’s the record. Absolute madness. He has the break chance, but fails at the first attempt. In the second he does it. 2: 2

Set 10 – Amazing what Peter Wright is playing. Again he throws a 180. That means he is only two (!) Short of the world record. “Snakebite” has to play this level to keep Anderson at a distance. But he can’t do that. Anderson secures the break with a 104 finish! 1: 2

Set 10 – Anderson doesn’t allow a break, he stays on a good average here. 1: 1

Set 10 – The match is tight and exciting – but so far eight of the nine sets have ended with 3: 1 or 1: 3. The tenth set begins with a throw-off for Wright, who delivers here, even if Anderson answers at an absolutely top level. 1-0

Set 9 – Anderson manages the break for that! With six perfect darts right in the middle and the 180s numbers 13 and 14, he’s back and checks over tops. 1: 3

Set 9 – “Snakebite” doesn’t break a break, Anderson checks his finish on double-10 with the first dart. 1: 2

Set 9 – Wright finds the answer and almost also the way to the high finish, which he only barely fails. But with the next darts he’ll make it. 1: 1

Set 9 – Anderson has a throw and brings the first leg home too. He must now win all three sets to defeat Wright. Can he do it? 0: 1

Set 8 – Impressive level from both athletes here. Wright is very lucky that an Anderson dart on double-11 is just razor-thin. Over the double-16, Wright closes the sentence. “Snakebite” only needs one sentence. Will the decision be made in the next? 3: 1

Set 8 – And here comes the re-break for Anderson! A 101 finish is checked. 2: 1

Set 8 – There’s an important break for Peter Wright! Because Anderson fails at “Tops”, “Snakebite” gets a chance. He uses it. 2-0

Set 8 – Wright fires and delivers the 25th 180 that evening. But then the scoring decreases, Anderson has the chance to go on the break. But the “Flying Scotsman” doesn’t have a good hit rate either. Wright picks up the leg. 1-0

Set 7 – What a strong level today. Wright almost manages the 170 finish, but fails on the “Bull’s Eye”. The 25 finish is too much for him, which Anderson takes advantage of. 1: 3

Set 7 – Anderson makes a mistake that almost costs him the leg. But Wright missed the 116 finish wafer-thin. No break for “Snakebite”. 1: 2

Set 7 – Wright confidently checks an 81 finish over double 13. 1: 1

Set 7 – Both start with a 180 in the leg, but then both of them lose their scoring. Wright leaves more. Anderson accommodates that on his own accusation. 0: 1

Set 6 – Bitter attack for Anderson who has a bouncer. Wright throws a 180 as a result. He takes the set of darts and with it the set over the double-8.

Set 6 – And there is the re-break for Anderson! Wright looked hard to beat on this set, but Anderson played a high level here. 2: 1

Set 6 – Wright goes up a gear in the scoring and gets his kick-off. 1-0

Set 5 – Wright puts forward well, plays the higher average in this set. But Anderson finished here 285 points in six darts. Very strong from the “Flying Scotsman”. 1: 3

Set 5 – Anderson gets his throw-off, Wright smells already on the break. But he checks 64 and takes the lead. 1: 2

Set 5 – Peter Wright wants to know. With 125 remaining he throws Bull’s Eye, Bull and … Bull. That spectacular finish almost worked. Anderson takes advantage of that and gets the re-break. 1: 1

Set 5 – Anderson urgently needs a second set and even has the throw-off advantage, but he gives the break because he fails to hit “tops” twice. 1-0

Set 4 – Now we have a match! Wright puts pressure on Anderson, wants the break. But Anderson still closes two double fields and secures the set. 1: 3

Set 4 – Just when you get the feeling that Wright is missing the triple, he delivers. With a high finish of 138, he gets his own throw-off. 1: 2

Set 4 – Anderson starts with a 180 and benefits from his good scoring. He can put a good finish on himself. He also takes advantage of that. 0: 2

Set 4 – Not bad, Gary Anderson. The “Flying Scotsman” knows that he has to deliver now – and he does. He secures the break. At 184 he throws two triple 20s and just throws a third. He then takes the leg over the double-2. 0: 1

Set 3 – Bitter mistake from Gary Anderson! The double world champion almost got the break, but of all things he failed at the checkout despite his strong double quota. Wright clears up and gets the third set as well. 3: 1

Set 3 – Five perfect darts for Peter Wright, the sixth is only slightly off. But it’s still enough to break. Strong performance from “Snakebite” with only twelve darts. 2: 1

Set 3 – The “Flying Scotsman” can’t break a break. 1: 1

Set 3 – Anderson is on fire. Both scored well, but the triples are missing in the finish area. Anderson has the advantage and knows how to use it. 0: 1

Set 2 – However, this does not repeat itself and Wright gets his throw-off and with it the set. 3: 2
