Madison Cunningham: “Revealer” (Review & Stream)

After her second album, “Who Are You Now”, the Californian was classified under “Americana” or “Folk”. But these categories for “revealers” fall far short, as Madison Cunningham reveals herself as a smart but not compulsively clever singer-songwriter with a lot of pop appeal – and a lot of self-deprecating humor, as her visit to the “hospital” of life demonstrates.

The eleven songs are as melodic as Aimee Mann’s, while more accessible than Fiona Apple’s. And as an electric guitarist, Cunningham isn’t as outspoken as something like St. Vincent (who would be?), but still has her own sound and style, as exemplified by her twisted calypso outing Anywhere or Your Hate Could Power A Train ” demonstrate.
