Three and a half years ago, American rapper Mac Miller was found dead in his Los Angeles apartment. A coroner determined that the 26-year-old died of an accidental overdose of cocaine, alcohol and the pain reliever fentanyl. In the United States, deaths from fentanyl abuse have been increasing for years. Around half of drug-related deaths in the United States also used fentanyl before they died. Even the smallest amounts of the synthetic opioid can be deadly.

Judgment against one of Mac Miller’s drug dealers

A verdict has now been reached in the trial that followed the night of death: A 39-year-old man was sentenced to 121 months in prison after pleading guilty last year to having passed on counterfeit medicines. However, he testified in court that he did not know that the drugs contained fentanyl. He asked for a five-year prison sentence. In addition to the now convicted two other drug dealers were involved in the death of Mac Miller.

Emotional statement of the mother

The process also got emotional when the mother of the deceased musician spoke up. She said: “My life got bleak when Malcom [Mac Miller] left the world. Malcom was my human, more than a son. We had a very good, close and irreplaceable relationship. We talked about everything almost every day – his life, his plans, his music and dreams.”

Mac Miller, whose real name was Malcom James McCormick, often addressed his drug use in his music. For example in his song “happy Birthday“. In May 2018 – about four months before his death – he crashed his car into a power pole and was subsequently arrested for driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol. On January 8, 2020, Mac Miller’s family posthumously released his album CIRCLES.
