Before Dutch celebrities are interviewed on television, there is often an entire preliminary conversation. Then the host or hostess knows exactly what can be asked. Eva Jinek, for example, really likes to work in this way. But Harry de Winter also prepares his Wintertijd broadcast in this way.

unfortunately

And so it could have happened that Maarten van Rossem burst into tears yesterday when a classical piece of music was started in Winter Time. “Unfortunately, I probably said in the preliminary interview that I like and listen to classical music a lot”, he responds in his podcast

But how did the makers know that this piece by Schubert would make him emotional? “That does not matter. I can give you ten other bits that have exactly the same terrible effect.”

Extremely sensitive

Why did Maarten cry so much? “I am extremely sensitive to romantic piano music and this was pre-eminently romantic piano music. It is astonishingly beautiful.”

Piano music has always made him emotional. “I’ve had this phenomenon for quite some time. I said to Harry de Winter recently: ‘I’m not going to tell you where the tears will flow.’”

no wood

Some people were surprised that Maarten can cry at all. “I have to say, I was surprised about that too. For years I thought I wasn’t actually human, but a reptile from another planet.”

According to the media, this was his first cry on television. “That doesn’t make sense, because then they haven’t been paying attention. There have certainly been moments before. This hits you so quickly.”
