Keeper Maarten Stekelenburg has decided to stop at Ajax after this season. The Amsterdam club announced this today. The 40-year-old goalkeeper will say goodbye to the Ajax crowd at the home game against FC Utrecht on Sunday.
His debut was on August 11, 2002. Ajax then played against PSV for the Johan Cruijff Shield and won 3-1. With the club, the goalkeeper won a total of five national titles, four KNVB Cups and four times the Johan Cruijff Shield. Stekelenburg played a total of 311 matches for Ajax 1.
Stekelenburg also played nine years abroad. In 2011 he went to AS Roma. He then played for Fullham, Monaco, Southampton and the last four years with Everton. Last June, Stekelenburg decided his expiring contract with Ajax with a year to extend.
This Sunday at 2.30 pm, the Ajax – FC Utrecht match will start in the Arena and the goalkeeper will say goodbye.
