With a defeat against ADO Den Haag (0-2), Maarten Martens said goodbye as trainer of Jong AZ. The Belgian coach will most likely stay longer with the Alkmaar club. “The intention is there on both sides.”
“I can’t confirm it yet,” says Maarten Martens after the loss against ADO Den Haag. “It makes sense that a next step is closer to the first team.” That means that he will most likely strengthen Pascal Jansen’s technical staff. “Indeed as an assistant.”
No left lane
Martens was responsible for Young AZ for two seasons. And he did that very well. Last season the Alkmaar talents finished in thirteenth place in the first division and eleventh this football year. Just not in the left row and that is partly due to the defeat against ADO Den Haag. “I’m very bummed about that.”

Best pledge team
Nevertheless, eleventh place is an excellent performance by Martens’ selection. Jong AZ has never finished so high in the ranking in the first division. And in addition, the Alkmaar youngsters are the best U23 team.
Next season, Jan Sierksma will do the honors at Jong AZ. The Frisian coach was the successful trainer of AZ under nineteen that won the Youth League last season.
