D.fter the success of the theatrical adaptation of Massimo Popolizio – on stage until a few days ago at Argentina Theater di Roma -, the novel by Antonio Scurati M. The son of the century (Premio Strega 2019) will become very soon too a tv series produced by Sky.
Written by Stefano Bises and Davide Serino and announced today, the series will tell the story of Benito Mussolini from foundation of the Italian Fasci in 1919 to the nefarious rise to power in Italy devastated by the end of the First World War.
M. The son of the century: the plot of the book
Mix of novel, essay and detailed biographythe book by Antonio Scurati recounts the years between 1919 and 1924 when Benito Mussoliniformer leader of the socialist party and editor of the newspaper Il Popolo d’Italia, slowly gains more and more support.
After the end of the bloody World War I, the future Duce, expelled from his party, has recently founded the movement of the Fasci di Combattimentowhich takes inspiration from the experience of the conflict that has just ended.
Still far from the crowds that will characterize its dictatorship in the 30s and 40s, Scurati describes Mussolini as a lonely man, without friends and from the soul male chauvinist who has little regard for women and uses them only for personal satisfaction. An already tragic figure that the writer tells in detail in all the stages of his rise to power.
M. The Son of the Century it also describes with absolute precision the atmosphere that reigned in Italy in those years, recounting the hopes that the people placed in Mussolini. Narrated in a composite but at the same time flowing way, the book wants above all reflect on current dangers what similar horrors, fomented by the modern populismcan dangerously come back into vogue.
The Sky TV series coming in 2023

As in the novel, private Mussolini and his love stories will also be told with his wife Rachele, his lover Margherita Sarfatti and his relations of power and friendship with other important figures of that era.
