Luxembourg is loosening massively – the obligation to wear a mask is largely falling

In view of a relaxed corona situation, Luxembourg wants to lift most of its measures. Prime Minister Xavier Bettel said on Friday that masks would no longer be compulsory and there would be no more access restrictions in restaurants, retail, at work or in sports. There is also no obligation to wear a mouth-nose cover at school. The easing served to bring normal life back, Bettel said. “Luxembourg survived the omicron wave well.” The development of the numbers and the forecasts are positive.

The 3G regulation only applies in hospitals and old people’s and nursing homes, according to which only vaccinated, recovered and tested people have access. The mask is still mandatory there, as well as in local public transport. “But we still recommend caution,” said Bettel. Even without a mask requirement, everyone is free to wear a mask. “We give back freedoms, but also rely on personal responsibility.” Because the pandemic is not over yet.

The text of the law should be discussed in Parliament next week. After that, the easing could come into effect. An exact date has not yet been set, said the prime minister after the government council meeting.

The incidence of new corona infections in Luxembourg was 736 per 100,000 inhabitants in the past calendar week (February 21 to 27). In January the value was a good 2400. (dpa)
