Lutjebroeker Marc Kuijn has been on his way to Nepal for a month: “I’m enjoying it immensely”

Marc Kuijn’s long bike ride is going well. The 29-year-old resident of Lutjebroek left his hometown by bicycle to Nepal a month ago. A journey of about 10,000 kilometers. In an update from Croatia, he says he is having a great time. “I almost became addicted to cycling.”

Marc from Lutjebroek is on his way to Nepal for a month and is now in the Croatian city of Split – Marc Kuijn

Marc left Lutjebroek on Saturday 20 May with family and friends who waved goodbye to him. He now resides in the Croatian city of Split. Marc is ‘very’ satisfied with his first weeks of cycling. “Many good days, but sometimes a bad day in between,” he says. “Fortunately, the good days far outweigh the bad.”

The odometer on his bike shows 2,500 kilometers after the first month of cycling. On average, Marc drives more than 600 kilometers per week. “It is pure pleasure”, he describes his feeling about the trip to South Asia. “I also feel very relaxed about it.”

The only ‘disadvantage’ for him is that he has become addicted to cycling. “The point is that my head and the rest of my body want to go further. But my ‘saddle area’ is more likely to suffer,” laughs Marc.

Vienna and clouds

The weather in the countries through which Marc has cycled is also less than in the Netherlands. Here the first drop of rain has yet to fall in more than 30 days, in Hungary the weather has been ‘very changeable’ according to the 29-year-old. “Especially during the day the weather was nice, but in the evening it came pouring out of the sky.”

And in the mountains he could not escape high humidity. For example, a descent of almost seventeen kilometers in the mountains of Međimurje – on the border between Slovenia and Croatia – went right through a cloud cover. This made it not only wet, but also “pitch dark” on the road. “When I really could hardly see anything, but that was also very special and beautiful to experience.”

This weekend Marc plans to relax on the beach of the Croatian city of Split. “I took a day off in Vienna to go through the city as a tourist and relax. Now that I’m at the coast I want to enjoy the sea. And maybe I can let go of cycling a little more .”

Turkey and Nepal

After the weekend, the Lutjebroeker hopes to continue cycling to Bosnia and Montenegro. According to Marc, it should be possible to cycle through Turkey next month. “Then the first continent is over.”

The 29-year-old Lutjebroeker has the South Asian country of Nepal in mind as his final destination. He also traveled here last year to do volunteer work. He stayed in the country for a few months, helping to build several buildings. He also got to know the people in Nepal well.

With his trip, Marc hopes to raise thousands of euros for charity: ‘Bright Futures of Bardia’. “They help to offer children from the region a future, for example by building schools,” explains de Lutjebroeker. Through his website you can learn more about the initiative, or donate.
