Lukashenko: Belarus has fighter jets that can be equipped with nuclear weapons

MINSK (dpa-AFX) – According to the ruler Alexander Lukashenko, in the former Soviet Republic of Belarus, converted Sukhoi Su-24 combat aircraft are now available for nuclear armament. The machines are – like with Kremlin boss Wladimir Putin agreed – had been converted, Lukashenko said on Friday in Minsk, according to the state news agency Belta. “Everything is ready!” Lukashenko said. In view of the growing tensions with the West, the country is thus in a position to react to threats in a variety of ways.

As part of NATO, the United States is currently moving military technology to Eastern Europe, said Lukashenko. “They should understand that if they continue to confront, no helicopters, planes will save them,” he said. “Me and Putin announced at a meeting in St. Petersburg that we are also converting the Belarusian Su aircraft so that they can carry nuclear weapons.”

The ruler of what is often referred to as the last “European dictatorship” has repeatedly claimed that Poland and other states pose a threat to Belarus. However, there is no evidence for this. Belarus is supporting Russia in its war against Ukraine, among other things, by providing military bases from which attacks on the neighboring country are also carried out. The country is economically dependent on Russia./mau/DP/ngu
