“Club of my Life”
Even at the age of 37, Luka Modric is not thinking about retiring and is hoping for a future at Real Madrid. “I want to stay here and that’s not changing,” said the midfielder (quoted via “realtotal.de“) at the press conference before the duel with Liverpool in the Champions League. Modric is the most-used player in his age group in Europe’s top five leagues this season and one of seven professionals with the “Royals” whose contracts expire at the end of the season. However, there have not yet been any talks about an extension.
“I have to talk to the club and see what the club wants. I want to keep going, but I also want to earn it. Nobody should give me anything. Nobody has ever given me anything in my life and it should stay that way. If the club wants me to continue, I would like that.” For him, the situation is “very relaxed”: “There is no need to rush, we are in the middle of the season, which is also incredibly long this year. We still have a few goals, I’m focused on the season.” In the two extensions in the last two years, the Croatian only signed a new contract after the end of the season.
Modric is currently in his eleventh season with the Spanish record champions. He joined Los Blancos from Tottenham Hotspur for €35m in 2012 and has made 467 appearances since then, scoring 37 goals and providing 74 assists and winning a total of 22 titles, including five Champions Leagues. Modric stressed: “No matter what happens, nothing can change my admiration for and view of Real Madrid. Real Madrid is the club of my life.”
