The regular flights of the main airline Lufthansa as well as Eurowings and Austrian Airlines will not take place this week, a Lufthansa spokesman said on Monday. The subsidiary Swiss is therefore sticking to its eight connections, since Switzerland, unlike Germany, has not issued a flight ban for Russian airlines. EU countries ban Russian airlines from using European airspace over Russia’s attack on Ukraine. In return, Russia banned airlines from individual European countries that had imposed sanctions since Friday from using Russian airspace.
Due to a corresponding decision by the federal government, Lufthansa decided at the weekend to cancel flights to Russia and to avoid the airspace for seven days. Passenger flights to Tokyo and Seoul therefore have to fly a longer southern route, resulting in longer flight times.
Meanwhile, the freight subsidiary Lufthansa Cargo canceled two flights from Frankfurt to Asia on Sunday and Monday. An alternative route could not be arranged at short notice, a spokeswoman said. Due to the dramatic developments in the Russia-Ukraine conflict, Lufthansa will no longer use Russian airspace.
The Lufthansa share temporarily lost 4.17 percent to 6.89 euros via XETRA on Monday.
