LTO stops consultations on agricultural agreement, disappointed minister Adema

Farmers’ organization LTO is withdrawing from negotiations with the cabinet on an agricultural agreement. As far as LTO is concerned, the desired restoration of confidence to talk about the future of farmers has not materialised.

In a statement at the Ministry of Agriculture, LTO chairman Sjaak van der Tak speaks of “a difficult decision”, writes the NOS. Van der Tak: “It gets stuck in intentions and our farmers cannot live on intentions”.

Minister Piet Adema of Agriculture finds it “extremely disappointing” that LTO is leaving the negotiating table. On Wednesday, he will speak further with the other interlocutors who are discussing an agricultural agreement.

“It is precisely the young farmers that we want to offer prospects for the future,” said Adema. The organization representing them has not yet stopped negotiations. The organization for organic farmers, nature organizations and supermarkets are also still at the table.

LTO chairman Van der Tak says that the cabinet offers farmers insufficient prospects. He did not want to go into what substantive points it broke down. “We are not going to pim-pam-hats about which points it is,” he emphasized.

“The tasks for the farmers increased, and there is not enough to compensate for that,” said Van der Tak. “It offers no future prospects for our farmers.” Van der Tak says he will provide a further explanation on Wednesday.
