Lowest inflation rate since the start of the Ukraine war

Inflation in Germany fell to its lowest level in 18 months in September. According to the Federal Statistical Office, consumer prices were 4.5 percent higher than in the same month last year. The authority thus confirmed an initial estimate on Wednesday. In August, a price increase of 6.1 percent within a year was recorded.

The last time there was a four to the decimal point in the annual inflation rate was in February last year when it was 4.3 percent. After the war in Ukraine began at the end of February 2022, energy prices rose rapidly and boosted inflation overall. Significantly increased prices are a burden for consumers. People can afford less for their money.

Compared to the previous month of August, consumer prices rose overall by 0.3 percent in September. Here too, the statisticians confirmed preliminary figures.

According to economists, inflation is likely to continue to weaken by the end of the year. The rate is now well away from its highest level since reunification of 8.8 percent in autumn 2022. (dpa)
