The Women’s Volleyball World Cup is underway for the second week. Holland-Brazil, one of the most interesting matches on Friday, is more special in one way, because in addition to two strong volleyball countries, spouses are pitted against each other.
Holland’s Anne Buijs30, and Brazil Ana Carolina da Silva31, have shared joys and sorrows during their six years together, but now the other will become a permanent opponent as the countries they represent fight for the last places in the playoffs.
Meeting spouses at the World Cup level is rare and has aroused interest in the media of the players’ home countries.
– Before and after the game we are a couple, but in between we are at war. It’s always special to play against each other. We have kept in touch with each other (during the tournament), but we don’t talk about the game, Buijs, preparing for the evening, commented to the Dutch NOS– for the news media.
The couple met in 2016 when they played as teammates in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Two years later, Buijs proposed to Silva. Over the years, club and national team patterns have sometimes kept the duo apart, but today they are once again representing the same club in Silva’s home country.
On Friday, it’s Buijs’ turn to enjoy the home advantage, as Holland and Poland are the host countries of the World Cup tournament. The match between Holland and Brazil starts on Friday at 21:15.
Silva reveals in the same interview that the couple plans to get married after the current volleyball season.
