“This record is without a doubt the best thing that has ever been recorded by anyone,” declared Lou Reed ahead of its release. You don’t have to fully agree with that.
It’s true, though, that “Lulu” isn’t nearly as horrid as one might have feared given the fact that Reed chose to accompany him, of all things, from the banal Californian bang metal band Metallica, and the whole thing from the notorious sound smoother Hal Willner let produce.
Beautiful abominations
Against all odds, “Lulu” became a sadomasochistic listening experience that was as pleasant as it was varied.
With his sooty voice, which has become even dirtier with age, Reed mumbles his way through all sorts of aberration fantasies, there is masturbation, copulation, vomiting, humiliation, while the band gets caught in heavy riff loops and Reed’s annoying recitation style in an at least equally annoying minimal whine -Metal exaggerated.
