Lots of rain coming, but it is welcome: “groundwater level very low in many places” (VMM)
During measurements last Sunday, the Flemish Environment Agency VMM established that 8 out of 10 measurement locations have a low to very low groundwater level. This concerns the so-called phreatic water level, which is the top layer of the groundwater. Nowhere was the groundwater level high.
“Further evolution depends on how much precipitation falls and how much water evaporates,” says the VMM. “A large rainfall deficit causes groundwater levels to fall faster or recover more slowly. The rain that is predicted from today is therefore very welcome and will have a positive effect on groundwater levels.”
Lots of rain coming
It is indeed going to rain a lot. For example, our weatherman Geert Naessens regularly predicts intense showers tonight and tomorrow, which could even cause nuisance locally. “There can easily be between 10 and 20 liters of water per square meter until morning,” says Naessens. “There will be longer periods of rain tomorrow as well. A new rain zone will come our way towards evening on Sunday.”
