Lots of enthusiasm for fisheries restructuring scheme. A third fishing companies want to be bought out

There is great enthusiasm for the fisheries restructuring scheme, reports the Ministry of Agriculture, Nature and Food Quality (LNV).

82 of the 284 cutter vessels want to be bought out by the government. A number of applications have already been rejected.

The scheme is intended for companies that no longer see a future in fishing. A large part of the Dutch fisheries sector will be adversely affected by Brexit. Companies that have registered for the scheme can still withdraw, the ministry reports.

Before the summer of 2023, Minister Piet Adema will announce how many companies can make use of the scheme. 155 million euros is available for this.

“We understand that the situation is drastic for the industry, and especially for fishing families. That is why the Ministry of Agriculture, Nature and Food Quality supports the transition to a smaller and more sustainable fleet,” says the ministry.

In the coming months, Minister Adema will talk to the sector about the details of the arrangements that should make this transition possible.
