In the 2023/2024 season, the Bundesliga will be more exciting than it has been for a long time. Lothar Matthäus is following the close race at the top between Bayer Leverkusen, FC Bayern, VfB Stuttgart, BVB and RB Leipzig with great pleasure.
“The constellation in the Bundesliga is very pleasing, the top team has moved closer together. Several teams can keep up in terms of play,” enthused the German record national player in a guest article for the “kicker”.
For Matthäus, Leverkusen is currently “Bayern’s biggest rival, although I have to praise BVB for how they got out of the spicy situation with a lost championship and a mediocre start to the season,” noted the 62-year-old.
The Dortmunders are therefore “a force to be reckoned with when it comes to the awarding of the title”, and he never expected Munich to go it alone again anyway.
The long-awaited classic between BVB and FC Bayern is on the program next weekend – both teams are still unbeaten.
“This Saturday nothing will be given to FCB, a herculean task awaits them. BVB is a force at home,” warned Matthäus, who is hoping for a “breathtaking top game”.
FC Bayern “initially worse rather than better” under Tuchel
The 1990 world champion now believes his FC Bayern is back on the right track.
“Thomas Tuchel didn’t manage the turnaround straight away in the spring, things initially got worse rather than better,” said Matthäus, but now “the team has gotten used to his style.”
However, he doesn’t see the German industry leader at its limit yet. The Tuchel troops are “not yet where they want to be,” today’s TV expert made clear.
Matthäus still sees a certain risk at FC Bayern: “The squad is good, with one restriction: it can’t have any long-term absences. With 17 outfield players you can perhaps play a World Cup over five weeks these days, but not a season with a Bundesliga or DFB Cup , Champions League and international matches.”
