At the beginning of the winter break, record national player Lothar Matthäus put together his top eleven for the Bundesliga half-year on “Sky”. While Bayer Leverkusen dominates the selection, FC Bayern is only represented twice. BVB even only appears once.
Matthäus chose Gregor Kobel from Borussia Dortmund as the best goalkeeper of the season so far. The Swiss is having a strong season and is proving to be a reliable support for the black and yellow team.
Matthäus’ defense consists entirely of Bayer Leverkusen players. Jeremie Frimpong, Jonathan Tah, Edmond Tapsoba and Alejandro Grimaldo form the back four.
The 62-year-old is in midfield Exequiel Palacios and Florian Wirtz also on two Leverkusen stars. The position is completed by Leroy Sané from FC Bayern and RB Leipzig’s Xavi Simons.
In attack, Matthäus would play with Bayern goalgetter Harry Kane and VfB life insurance Serhou Guirassy.
With a view to the numerous Bayer games, Matthäus said: “Alonso has really achieved something great that many people wouldn’t have believed Leverkusen could do. The purchasing policy also worked really well, all of the new signings were 100 percent successful.”
Leverkusen are at the top of the Bundesliga table at the winter break. Coach Xabi Alonso’s team hasn’t lost a single game yet. There are 13 wins and three draws.
FC Bayern follows in second place, four points – and one game less – behind. VfB Stuttgart has established itself in third place, followed by RB Leipzig and Borussia Dortmund.
