Lothar Matthäus counts on Thomas Tuchel

FC Bayern will probably lose all three titles they are aiming for this season. Because these were still within reach when Julian Nagelsmann was still head coach, TV expert Lothar Matthäus has now dealt against Nagelsmann’s successor Thomas Tuchel.

When Julian Nagelsmann was surprisingly dismissed from FC Bayern at the end of March this year, the top floor in Munich justified this with a sporting downward trend, among other things. The FCB stars had just lost their lead in the table in Leverkusen, but the championship was still within reach – just like the DFB Cup and the Champions League.

Thomas Tuchel took over for Nagelsmann, but he was eliminated from both cup competitions with the unsettled team and also no longer has the league title in his own hands before the last matchday. While most observers give the new head coach little to blame for the decline, TV expert and record national player Lothar Matthäus sees it very differently.

“Of course, many mistakes were made even before the change of coach, which ultimately led to this situation,” Matthäus said to “Bild”, but added unequivocally: “But the team that was still on triple course under Nagelsmann is playing worse under Tuchel.”

According to Matthäus, Tuchel has increased the uncertainty among the Bayern stars. The reason: “Because at his press conferences, which seem a bit strange to me, he always talks about how difficult everything is and what doesn’t work, instead of standing in front of the team.”

The 62-year-old emphasized that the squad was actually “so strong individually” that the Munich team should have at least been champions.

FC Bayern: Transfer rumors cause uncertainty

In addition to the PKs, which Matthaus said were strange, there was also “the unnecessary discussion” about Thomas Müller and his future at Bayern Munich and “too many changes of position”. Matthäus also had an example ready: “Compared to the 6-0 win against Schalke on matchday 32, Gnabry suddenly played on the left a week later in the 3-1 draw against Leipzig, Coman on the right and Müller as a centre-forward, which is certainly not his best position. How should there be stability and security?” asked the former Bayern professional.

Because Tuchel already felt a lot of pressure for the coming season due to the missed opportunities, he is now demanding new players, which is also not beneficial. “The fact that names like Declan Rice, Adrien Rabiot and Julian Alvaréz leaked out in the all-important championship phase also contributed to the team’s uncertainty,” said Matthäus.

The Munich team doesn’t need that many new players. The current team could do a lot more, according to the 62-year-old, which is “also a question of leadership and motivation”. Another dig at Tuchel.

The head coach does not need the mentioned Rice at all. “If Kimmich holds his position again, Bayern don’t need a new six. He and Goretzka, that worked well in the past, at Bayern and in the national team. It’s up to the coach to get it back together,” Matthäus demanded.
