Andreas Brehme died last Tuesday. The ex-national player was a close friend of Lothar Matthäus – who is still affected by death.
They were teammates and, above all, friends: Andreas Brehme and Lothar Matthäus. Before FC Bayern’s top game against RB Leipzig on Saturday evening, the record national player was asked about Brehme’s death as an expert on Sky by presenter Sebastian Hellmann – and reacted very emotionally.
Matthäus went on to emphasize that Brehme was not only a long-time teammate, but above all a friend and family member. Lothar Matthäus has never played more games with a teammate in his long career – which underlines the close bond between the two, who always shared a room with the national team and at Inter Milan.
“As if a family member died”
At the end of his emotional monologue, Matthäus was almost in tears – a moment that probably gave TV viewers goosebumps. Hellmann then stopped the interview and sent the broadcast to a commercial break.
Immediately after the death was announced on Tuesday, Matthäus said: “We were roommates, with the national team and with Inter Milan. We often spent 100 nights a year together. This friendship wasn’t over even after our careers. It’s really as if Family member died.”
There was also a minute’s silence for Brehme before the game between Bayern and Leipzig.
