Through the eye of the needle, that’s what we call it. Kennedy Littledike (19) was catapulted from her car in a traffic accident with such force that she landed nine meters high in an electricity cable. The American would dangle there for an hour with her broken left leg. Now – almost three years and 21 operations later – she has regained her zest for life. “The situation is completely different. I have lost a leg, but I feel much happier,” he said.
Littledike was just 16 years old when tragedy struck. Together with two friends she had driven to a nearby mountain to watch the sunset from there. In this way she hoped to deal with a recent love break.
On the way back her eyes turned black. The teenager from Nampa, Idaho, lost control and crashed into a pole at high speed. “I had started crying just before. I don’t remember the exact reason, but it was a very emotional period,” Littledike explains.
“I tried to correct it as soon as I started to slip, but in vain. None of us were wearing seat belts, the impact was enormous. I was catapulted out of the car and literally flew through the air. I felt my arm tear off, it was only attached with skins.”
Miracles
Before Littledike knew it, she was hanging upside down in the power line. An extremely uncomfortable position, but her guardian angel was working overtime. “Normally I would have bled to death, but miraculously the main artery in my leg was pinched by the electricity cable. The main artery in my arm was cauterized again when I was electrocuted.”
“All the blood that flowed from my arm and leg ended up in my nose. I almost drowned in it. I felt so powerless, I was sure I was going to die. Strangely enough, I didn’t feel much pain at the time. That way I could stay conscious the whole time, otherwise I might have fallen down.”
Five amputations
It ultimately took an hour before the power was turned off and firefighters were able to save her. The nightmare left Littledike with a broken femur, humerus and collarbone.
“Doctors tried to save as much of my leg as possible, resulting in a total of five amputations. Each time a little more had to be removed,” the teenager remembers.
Gobi
The news that she would lose her entire leg hit her like a bombshell. For a while anyway… “After twenty minutes I had come to terms with it. I even came up with a name for my stump: Gobi. I have no idea what happened to me in that hospital, but my mindset was really positive.”
Her friends Nakia Molina and Jacob Rasmussen also suffered broken bones and shattered vertebrae, but have since fully recovered. “While I was hanging there, I heard one of them crying. My heart broke into a million pieces then, because I was the cause of all the misery and could do nothing for them,” said the teenager.
“I used to want to commit suicide”
Littledike now shares her story via social media and she does not shy away from humor. She now has more than 382,000 followers on TikTok.
“Before my accident, I was struggling with my mental health. I even wanted to commit suicide. I didn’t plan anything because I thought there simply wouldn’t be a future. When I look back on it now, I feel quite sad. My situation is completely different, but I am much happier,” the girl concludes.
