Nearly 2,000 people who died in the first year of the Covid pandemic and whose bodies were never claimed were buried in Los Angeles on Thursday.
The cremated remains were placed in a communal grave in a ceremony attended by religious and political leaders, among others.
This included 1,937 residents who died in 2020 and whose bodies were never claimed by relatives.
When the Covid-19 pandemic emerged, the County of Los Angeles was one of the hardest-hit areas in the United States, with around 3.7 million infections and more than 35,000 deaths in three years through March 2023, according to data from the Johns Hopkins University.
