Wiebes is the leader of DSM in the Tour. Still, anyway. Next year she will wear a different shirt: that of SD/Worx, according to various sources. The transition is striking. Wiebes says she is in the right place at DSM from a sporting point of view and she has a continuous contract until the end of 2024. But that same contract contains a clause that gives her the opportunity to accept significantly more interesting offers from other teams.
The amount of money being pumped into women’s cycling has risen sharply over the past few years, and with it the market value of the fastest sprinter in the pack. Wiebes received offers from various sides that were considerably higher than her salary at DSM. For Wiebes it is simply a contract improvement that she cannot refuse; she becomes the highest earning woman in the pack.
Because DSM was unable or unwilling to match the offers financially, Wiebes was free to choose another team. It became SD/Worx, one of the strongest teams in the peloton for years. In that team she becomes a teammate of, among others, Demi Vollering and Lotte Kopecky.
Wiebes signs a contract with SD/Worx until the end of 2025.
