The Canadian musician Loreena McKinnett has been recording albums with electric and Celtic sounds from pop, folk and world music since the mid-1990s. In the last year she has devoted herself to traditional Christmas carols.

The album “Unter A Winter’s Moon” consists of live recordings of a concert from 2021 at the Knox Church in Stratford, Canada. McKinnett sings traditional tunes like “Coventry Carol” and “Good King Wenceslas”. It accompanies itself on the harp, the keyboard or the accordion. The 15 Christmas-themed tracks are complemented by a variety of stories narrated by Canadian folk singer Tom Jackson, actor Cedric Smith and Ojibway Indigenous artist Jeffrey Red George.

McKinnett writes in the CD booklet that it was important to her “to combine literal elements of different cultures with traditions to let us be inspired, but also to bring the past to life”.
