Lorde looks back on PURE HEROINE and still thinks it’s “cute”

“I have a lot of respect for the vision of the little one that she did,” shares Lorde.

Lorde’s debut album PURE HEROINE was released ten years ago now. To mark the milestone anniversary, the New Zealand singer is now remembering the time in a newsletter and sharing what she now thinks about the work.

“A lot of things are no longer good after ten years. But I’m still totally touched by this sweet record. I have great respect for the vision of the little one that she made,” the message to her fans reads.

Speaking about the process of creating her debut, Lorde says: “I started smoking weed, which gave me a deeper understanding of sensory pleasures and allowed me to see my world as a possible work of art. I took long walks around the neighborhood and noticed things around me […] to mythologize and from this develop the motifs that would become Pure Heroine.”

Lorde also extends special thanks to New Zealand music producer Joel Little. At that time he wrote and produced all the songs together with her. She always appreciated that he never treated her condescendingly. At the time of recording the album, Lorde was 15 years old and says that it wasn’t easy for her as a teenager with some adults.

PURE HEROINE was released on September 27, 2013. The single “Royals” in particular was intended to give her career a boost. With the track, Lorde landed in the charts for a whopping 107 weeks and stayed at number one on the Billboard 100 for nine weeks. And in 2014, she received a Grammy for “Song of the Year” for “Royals”. The 26-year-old remembers today: “During this phase it felt as if I had managed everything with my own hands. Every week was the most exciting week of my entire life. […] I had zero cultural context, no idea whether an interview or TV show was big or small, and so I breezed through everything without really caring.”

In addition, she announces in her newsletter that some new merchandise pieces will be available on her website for the PURE HEROINE anniversary website be available.
