Lookout tower along Zuidlaardermeer processed with circular saw: ‘You almost think there is something behind it’

Another watchtower has fallen prey to vandals. At the beginning of February gratings were already removed from a tower in De Onlanden, now steps from a staircase of a tower along the Zuidlaardermeer near Noordlaren have been sawn away. Marco Glastra of Het Groninger Landschap was taking a walk through the nature reserve when he discovered for himself that the watchtower had been destroyed.

He saw that no half work had been done in that destructiveness. “A circular saw was used to remove wood,” says the director of Het Groninger Landschap. That made him very angry. “Perhaps people need the wood for an Easter bump,” he sighs, without wanting to point out the guilty. But the frustration is huge. “It was also hit this weekend at a bird watching hut in the Twijzelermieden (near Kootstertille, ed.) and at the Kiekkaaste (near Drieborg, ed.). The destruction is so targeted, it is almost striking.”
