Looking inside Sandra in Buytenwegh: ‘Every day feels like a holiday here’

Sandra van den Nouweland (41) sent an invitation to the editors of the Zoetermeer neighborhood to come and take a look at her single-family home in the Buytenwegh district. During our visit, Sandra knew how to tell a special story about every room in the house.

More than eleven years ago, the Leidschendam native moved to the Multatulihove in Zoetermeer. “My son went to special education in Zoetermeer by taxi every day. I wanted to take him to school myself, so I decided to move,” says Sandra. “Since then I have been living here with a permanent holiday feeling. With the flat roof it looks like a holiday home.”

Colorful entrance hall

Before the move, Sandra’s friends took care of the entrance hall. “They renovated my hall and decorated the walls in cheerful colours,” says Sandra. “As a reminder of her deceased cat and dog Lucky, she bought two sparrow statues. “I saw them at a flower shop and put them in my hall. They were a bit worn because they had been outside for a long time. A friend painted them in a bright blue and pink color. I call them my hugs.”

Living room

The living room is just as colorful as the entrance hall. “Some time ago I was looking for a wallpaper border with swans to stick on the top of the walls in the living room. I made a mistake in the print and accidentally bought wallpaper with pictures of a fairground. In the end I thought it was funny and just stuck it on my walls.”

Spiritual kitchen

Sandra’s father fixed up the kitchen. “My father is actually more of a wrecker, but he did a good job with the kitchen,” she says. “He laid a laminate floor and painted the walls purple.” According to Sandra, the kitchen is the most spiritual place in the house. “I chose this warm color based on feeling. It’s a nice space: the neighborhood cats often come and walk in.”

Sandra hangs the tea and towel on the hooks in the shape of farm animals. “My dream is to live on a farm one day. Who knows, I might meet a nice farmer one day.”

Tidy bedroom

Sandra likes a tidy house, because: “It gives me peace of mind”, she explains. “My bedroom consists of different colours. Green stands for healing, blue for communication and pink is my favorite color. I have fond memories of my closet and I store all my stuff in it.”

On the wall hangs a painting with two dogs. “I got that from my mother,” says Sandra. “It shows my previous dogs Frenkie and Lovely. Frenkie was a traumatized dog who came to live with me after four different owners. Dobberman Lovely was too strong for me so I had to look for a new home. I miss them both very much. I am a real dog friend: I feel like they are watching over me.”
