Iltalehti compiled what to watch from different streaming services for the Christmas holidays as well as for weeknights in December.

If Christmas-themed series and movies don’t feel like yours, don’t worry! This listing contains ten series and movies from both Finland and abroad, from classics to newer ones.

White Lotus / HBO Max

The second season of White Lotus, which can be found on the HBO Max service, started in late autumn 2022. The series is a social satire that follows the luxury vacations of wealthy Americans in a high-quality resort. The series contains a lot of dark humor, but also quite fascinating drama.

The first season takes place in Hawaii and the second in Sicily.

The series was created by the writer-director Mike White. In the second season, the main roles will be seen, among others, charmed in the previous season Jennifer CoolidgeAubrey Plaza and familiar from The Sopranos Michael Imperioli.

Love, Lizzo / HBO Max

Documentary film about pop superstar Lizzo. The documentary is about Melissa Viviane Jefferson, aka Lizzo under her stage name. The artist brings out body positivity, mental health problems and racism in his music.

The artist’s journey has not been rosy, but he has had to go through a tough school before becoming a superstar: the death of his father made young Jefferson homeless and, at worst, even living in his car.

The documentary was directed by an American Doug Pray.

Munkkivuori / Viaplay

The domestic serial novelty Munkkivuori dives back into the 1980s and into the dark theme of a small child disappearing from the yard of a Helsinki suburb. The mystery doesn’t seem to be solved and the adults in the neighborhood take the law into their own hands.

The series is from the point of view of children and young people and deals with one summer vacation in the yard of the same house. However, Munkkivuori is not suitable for small children to watch, even though children are seen in the main roles.

The series stars, among others Laura BirnEero Milonoff, Joonas Saartamo, Anna-Maija Tuokko and Olavi Uusivirta. Among other things, you will be seen in the child roles Viljami Loponen, Stella Leppikorpi and Crap Ross.

The series was directed and written by Jani Volanen. He developed scripts together with his spouse Pirjo Longa.

Dear Children / Yle Areena

Dear children is a new comedy series from the creators of the popular Siskonpeti sketch series about sibling relationships and mother relationships; when someone is the most beloved and the most infuriating at the same time.

The adult sisters return to their childhood home to look after their wild mother, who is recovering from a cerebral infarction. The visit, which was intended to be short, drags on and the childhood home serves as a refuge for the sisters’ personal crises.

The main roles are played by Miitta Sorvali, Pirjo HeikkiläNiina Lahtinen, Krisse Salminen, Sanna Stellan and Joonas Nordman. They wrote the series Anna DahlmanNiina Lahtinen and Anna Brotkin.

Sulfur yellow sky / Yle Areena

Kjell Weston based on the bestselling novel and Claes Olsson directed by the TV series is a story about how love and friendship change over the decades.

The cast includes Nicke Lignell, Tom Rejstrom, Linda Zilliacus, Sannah Nedergaard, Jonna Järnefelt, Pekka StrangMimosa Willamo as well as Johanna av Schultén.

UK Office / Cmore

Many praise the American The Office, but the original idea is British. Now the acclaimed mockumentary series is available to watch on Cmore.

The original version, shown in 2001-2002, stars top comedian Ricky Gervais. The series follows the daily life and human destinies of the office of an English paper company in dark tones.

Gervais, who plays the lead role, has co-created the series by Stephen Merchant with.

The Crown / Netflix

The fifth season of The Crown, which delves into the secrets of the Brittish court, created a stir even before it began. The fictional dramatization of the life stages of the court has especially angered the royals.

The fifth season largely focuses on the private life of the then Prince Charles. In the series, it is also hinted that Charles would have planned to depose his mother, Queen Elizabeth. Prime minister John Major has denied having any conversations with Charles referring to the issue.

The fifth season also features Princess Diana’s last moments. The Sun previously reported that the upcoming plot twists have raised concerns even in the production of the series.

See you as Charles Dominic West and Elizabeth Debicki as Diana. The series is created by Peter Morgan.

Case Aarnio / Discovery+

Ex-chief of the Helsinki Narcotics Police, elected police officer of the year in 1987 Jari Aarnio has investigated and solved the most serious crimes in Finnish history for decades. Aarnio’s award-winning police career ended in 2013. Since then, he was sentenced to long prison terms for several crimes.

The criminal process with its various twists and turns has attracted a lot of attention. But have things gone as they have been presented in the public before?

Classic: Metsolat / Yle Areena

Metsolat is a beloved Finnish drama series that tells the story of the Metsol family in the whirlwind of the challenging 1990s in many ways.

The central venue is the Metsoloi’s home farm Leppävaara and the municipality of Hoika. Part of the family has moved far from their childhood home, but everyone’s roots are still strong in Kainuu. The Metsol family shares joys and sorrows, successes and setbacks together.

The series is directed by Carl Mesterton, who wrote Metsolat together Anna-Liisa Mestertonin, by Curt Ulfstedt, Heikki Vuennon and Miisa Lindén with.

Tikku and Taku’s rescue patrol / Disney+

This is an animation hit suitable for the whole family!

The legendary Tiku and Taku rescue team made a comeback when the Disney+ streaming service released a new movie version of it.

The film is based on the Tikun ja Taku rescue patrol series published in 1990 and also acts as a sequel to it. It combines animation and live-action, i.e. the end result played with real actors.

It has been directed by Akiva Schaffer. They are responsible for the script Dan Gregor and Doug Mand.
