Trump visited the state of South Carolina on Monday as part of his election campaign. The ex-president made a stop at a gun shop, where he was presented with all kinds of models.
Steven Cheung, Trump’s spokesman, shared a video of the visit on X, formerly Twitter. “President Trump buys a @GLOCKInc in South Carolina!” Cheung captioned the video. The footage shows the store owner displaying a Glock with Trump’s face on it. The ex-president is clearly impressed and says he “must have” a copy. “I really want to buy one,” Trump said.
The message quickly caused a stir. In the comments, many Internet users rightly wondered whether such a purchase would be legal. For example, under US law, those charged are not allowed to purchase a gun. And since Trump has been charged with dozens of crimes, he would also be committing a serious violation of the law.
Barely two hours after the video was shared, Trump’s team backtracked by stating that the presidential candidate “didn’t buy the gun in the end.” “President Trump did not purchase or take possession of the firearm. He only indicated that he would like to have one,” he said. The video of the visit was also taken offline.
