The 81-year-old Republican gave a press conference in Convington, Kentucky, on Wednesday afternoon. Images from the American channel NBC show how he suddenly seems to react confused when a journalist in the room asks him whether he would stand for re-election in 2026. Initially, McConnell asks to repeat the question, then stare into the depths without saying anything. The politician remains like that for seconds. One of his employees comes to the rescue and repeats the question in the senator’s ear, eventually calling in a second employee. “Excuse me, we need a moment,” she says to the journalists present.

Finally, the employees exchange a few words with the senator, after which another question is asked by a journalist. The employee repeats the question loud and clear, and McConnell begins to answer, but his voice becomes increasingly inaudible. In the end, the man is led away by his associates. According to a spokesman, McConnell felt “dizzy for a moment” and will pass by the doctor.

It is a repeat of an incident from a month ago, on July 27. Also then, McConnell suddenly ‘froze’ during a press conference.

In March, McConnell was hospitalized after a fall that left him with a concussion and a broken rib. A McConnell aide said after today’s incident that “although the senator is feeling fine, he will now consult a physician before any public event as a precaution.”
