TikTok star Lisa Sun and her boyfriend David are surprised when they get the bill after a restaurant visit. To Lisa’s surprise, the restaurant charged a group supplement, even though they only dined with two people: “Our ‘group’ really couldn’t be smaller.” She found the real reason why Lisa had to pay extra even more absurd: “I have to pay extra for live music that I didn’t ask for?”
Lisa pays the surcharge nicely, but does ask her followers on TikTok if they would agree to this extra allowance. Many of her followers agree: “This is just robbery in broad daylight! I would never pay this.”
Attract customers with the prices of your menu, but then charge small amounts extra: ‘drip pricing’ has become extremely popular since the corona crisis. In Australia there is no clear legislation regarding the phenomenon. Here in Belgium, yes. Customers should not be charged for extra things that they do not specifically opt for. You may therefore have to pay extra for extra fries or an extra jar of mayonnaise, but your cutlery or live music may not be charged extra here.
