Six people were injured in a serious traffic accident in the Stationsstraat in Sint-Denijs-Boekel on Wednesday evening. Two of them are in serious condition.

The accident happened in the Stationsstraat in Sint-Denijs-Boekel in the direction of Zwalm. The driver of a Mercedes Vito tried to overtake a Volkswagen Polo, but that maneuver went badly: the car hit the vehicle in front. The passenger car was catapulted away and ended up on the bike path, where it in turn knocked over a cyclist. The car that made the overtaking maneuver left the road after the collision.

There he ran into two parked cars. In its speed, the car also dragged, among other things, a stone mailbox and building materials that were stacked on the street side. The balance of the impressive blow is heavy: a passenger in the hit VW Polo was seriously injured. Firefighters had to free her from the car. The cyclist who was hit also suffered serious injuries.

Children

Two children aged five and six were also slightly injured in one of the hit parked cars. “We had just got in the car to leave when the accident happened,” said the children’s father. Finally, the driver of the VW Polo and the driver were also taken to hospital as a precaution.

With screeching tires

According to the initial findings and statements of witnesses, the accident was due to excessive speed. “From a distance I heard the car of the person who caused the accident approaching with screeching tires. I thought: this is going to end badly. And look: what a havoc”, thinks a woman who saw the accident happen.
