Greece reacts with shock to images of a terrible incident that took place last night in the port of Piraeus. A passenger who wanted to take a ferry there but arrived too late, still tried to jump aboard the departing ship. However, crew members stopped him and pushed him overboard. The 36-year-old man did not survive. The captain of the ship and three crew members will now have to answer for murder.

Video footage of the incident found its way to social media, where people responded with disbelief. They show how the passenger still jumps onto the loading ramp of the departing ferry of the Blue Horizon shipping company. At that moment it is still nicely in place on the quay.
However, he encounters two crew members who do not let him pass, but push him back onto the quay. If the passenger tries to board a second time, things go wrong. Again a member of the crew pushes the man backwards, but because the ship is already sailing away, he falls between the loading bridge and the shore.
To look
The images then show how the crew just stands and doesn’t seem to do anything to help the man. The ferry continues to its destination: Crete.
However, he never arrived there, because the authorities ordered the captain to turn back a little later. After all, several witnesses had seen everything and notified the emergency services. Rescue services meanwhile took the passenger unconscious from the water. He was later pronounced dead. An autopsy will determine the exact cause of death.
Greek Merchant Navy Minister Miltiadis Varvitsiotis has already expressed shock, saying he felt “horrified and saddened” by seeing the images. He told the Greek radio station ‘Parapolitika’ that the behavior of the crew members involved was “a base insult to Greek sailors”.
Valid ticket
He also knew that the passenger had a valid ticket and had boarded the plane on time, but that he had suddenly jumped off the plane for some unknown reason and returned a short time later.
According to Greek media, the victim is Antonis Karyotis (36), a man who lived in Agios Nikolaos on Crete. According to ‘Radio Crete’ he often traveled to Piraeus and the crew knew him.
Attica Group – the owner of Blue Horizon – reacted shortly. It said it is “devastated” by the “tragic incident” and will cooperate with the authorities’ investigation.
Public prosecutor
The captain of the ferry, his first mate and two other crew members will appear before the public prosecutor in Piraeus today. They will then be formally charged.
Piraeus is the largest port in Greece and the main gateway for millions of travelers visiting Crete and the islands of the Aegean Sea.
