LOOK. 50 years after murder of young American woman, cold case solved by cigarette butt | Abroad

Years passed without any progress in the case, even though the evidence had been in front of the investigators all along. A cigarette butt was found at the crime scene, but it was only now that advanced techniques could be used to examine the DNA on the evidence. The DNA on the butt matched the DNA of William DeRoos’ half-brother. As a result, investigators can now conclude that DeRoos is the killer.

Even though the cold case has been solved, William will not be punished for his actions. He died in 1986 of an overdose. Rita’s family is relieved that the case can finally rest.
