The longest cake in Drenthe? Until this weekend, it didn’t exist at all. But they have changed that at De Paasbergen care home. In the context of Neighbors Day, residents and neighbors were called upon to bake a cake, in order to form the longest possible row of cakes.
Alderman Ankie Huijing van Tongeren came to measure the row of cakes, which turned out to be almost 7 meters. Quite an achievement, although the neighboring province of Groningen has not been defeated. A row of 15 meters was once laid there.
After the row with cake had been measured, residents were of course allowed to taste a piece. The herb cake was very well received by resident Bennie Wolbers. Although he used to work in a bakery, this time he didn’t bake a cake himself. “I’ve been retired for a long time.” Annie Stevens also tries out a piece of cake. One with lemon in it. “Very good.”
Grietje Mulder, a volunteer at the day care, also baked two cakes with a few residents. It was very pleasant, but difficult to stay away from it for another day, she says.
But it is of course mainly about Neighbors Day today, which is officially celebrated every year on the 4th Saturday in September. “That is very important so that everyone can come out of their isolation, go outside and meet people,” explains Suzanne Broeksema, activity supervisor at De Paasdagen. “Just a nice get-together. And that’s what we came up with this activity for.”
Between the row of cakes is also a ‘space cake’, which is actually cake with weed in it. It’s a joke from one of the activity leaders. “Oh, I don’t know that at all,” says Annie. And with a big wink: “But I might as well give it a try.”
